There are so many amazing things to tackle while visiting St. Augustine but one of our absolute favorites is fishing! Fishing in February is especially exciting for the fact that it is Mahi, Wahoo, and KingFish season! So if you’re debating on when a good time to visit is and you love to fish then February is your month!
Fishing For Mahi.
Now is the time to start preparing to catch some gnarly Mahi! From now until June come see how big of a dolphin you can get. Most Mahi-dolphin tournaments are held in the month of May so come and get first dibs at the large dolphins swimming off the coast of St. Augustine up to Mayport. Trolling is a fabulous way to find these fish once you have an idea of where they are swimming. Pay attention to rips, bait school, weedlines, and other debris. Do not forget to leave the first one that is caught in the rod holder as it will often attract more schools of fish to you.
Fishing for Wahoo
Wahoo season is upon us as well! If you can handle going about 40 miles offshore then you will be able to find some big wahoo that are most definitely worth your while. They usually average around 40 pounds and if you are lucky you can find them up to 60 or 70 pounds! Many veteran anglers will say wahoos will only improve in the coming weeks! Who knows how great this season will be but we have great hopes for a promising wahoo season.
While you might be here for Mahi or for Wahoo, everyone seems to agree Kingfish, or as the local anglers like to call them “Kings” are where it’s at! You can fish just about anywhere and everywhere in the local area and get a good catch. From The St. Johns River to the Intercostal and even the Atlantic, you are sure to have a fabulous outcome no matter where you go. Last year they were catching up to 82 panfish and catfish at a time out of the St. Johns River. For the first time ever last year, there was some hearsay of multiple mangrove snapper being caught in the intercostal. There were some kingfish caught between 80 and 100 feet off the coast of the Atlantic last year and show great promise of being there again this year.
Come on out starting this February and get your fishing on. We are so ready to start this fishing season off strong and see what everyone comes up with. We have a good feeling about this season and you can too!
